Coverage

Every province and territory on the map.

The regulations are live in British Columbia today: freshwater, salmon and tidal waters, all free.

A map of Canada showing the 160,062 rivers and lakes covered by ReelRegs. Coverage reaches every province and territory, densest across the lake country of Ontario and Quebec and thinning towards the Arctic. British Columbia is picked out in green, where the fishing regulations are live.
Regulations live On the map
The ReelRegs map with Environment Canada's precipitation forecast drawn over British Columbia, a front sweeping in off the Pacific across Vancouver Island and the south coast. Klein Lake's conditions panel is open beside it showing 13 degrees and overcast, 3 km/h wind, 90 percent humidity and 1002 hPa.
Klein Lake on the Sunshine Coast, its conditions beside the forecast on the map.
Weather and Light

See what is coming before you commit to a morning.

Live temperature, wind, pressure and the sun times sit on every water, free. Pro draws the weather on the map as well: radar, cloud, and Environment Canada's precipitation forecast for the hours ahead, so a front moving in is something you see rather than something you discover.

More about conditions
Two Island lakes side by side in a Pro Shortlist for Wednesday October 14. Cowichan Lake has 3 of its 5 rules in force, the rest out of season: a cutthroat trout retention limit of 2 fish 50 cm or shorter, and two boat speed limits. Elk Lake has all 6: a smallmouth bass retention limit of 4, a 7.5 kW motor power limit, stretches where boats and powered boats are not allowed, and two more. Below them the day's weather - heavy drizzle at 12 to 16 degrees on Cowichan, light drizzle at 9 to 15 on Elk - and the sunrise and sunset for each.
Two Island lakes for one day, on Pro. Same date, different rules, different weather.
Shortlist

Line up your Shortlist and see what separates them.

What applies on each water, side by side, for the day you are actually going. Rows where every water matches go quiet, so what is left on screen is the difference between them. Free lines up two waters. Pro holds up to eight, with the weather, when the low light falls, and how each has fished for you before.

More about Shortlist
The catch log, listing catches by date with species, length and water, beside totals, a year of activity and personal bests.
Twelve catches across five waters, with personal bests and a year of activity.
Catch Log

Your best water, your best month, your biggest fish.

Log a fish in seconds, as many as you like, on any plan. Your Year of Fishing, with Pro, reads the log back: personal bests by species, your best month, the water quietly out-producing the rest. Private to your account, never sold, and yours to export whenever you want.

Good to know

Frequently asked

  • Is ReelRegs an official source of fishing regulations?

No, and we would not want you to treat it as one. ReelRegs is a reference tool that makes the rules easier to find and read. It is a reference and planning tool, not an official or legal source. The official regulations from the Province of British Columbia (freshwater) and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (salmon and tidal waters) are the law, and where ReelRegs and an official source disagree, the official source is correct.

  • What does it cover?

Three fisheries, all of British Columbia. Freshwater regulations for every region, set by the Province. Salmon, set federally by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, river by river. And tidal waters, also federal, by management area and subarea along the whole coast. The map itself covers every province and territory, so you can look at water anywhere in Canada even where the regulations are not live yet.

  • Is it really free?

Every regulation we carry is free, in all three fisheries. So are The Map, search, filtering by species and date, Rule Watch on every water you follow, live weather and Catch Log. Pro works across your waters: Today on Your Waters, Notice Board, Area Scan, an eight-water Shortlist, Spot Check, Radar and the Full Forecast, and Your Year of Fishing.

  • Does it work without a signal?

Not today. ReelRegs needs a connection, so check the water before you set off rather than relying on it somewhere with no bars. We are building apps for iPhone and Android so your waters come with you, signal or not.

  • What if a rule looks wrong?

Tell us. Every water, salmon river and tidal subarea carries a Report an issue button, and it goes straight to the people who can fix it rather than into a support queue. We would far rather hear from you than not, and a report that turns out to be nothing still tells us something was confusing.

  • What happens when the rules change mid-season?

In-season closures and rule changes come into the app, each one linked back to the government notice it came from, with the date it takes effect. Follow the waters you fish and Rule Watch shows you when something on them changes, on the free plan. Pro adds Today on Your Waters, with what is in effect on every water you follow and what is about to change, and Notice Board, every in-season notice on every water.

  • Do I need an account?

Yes, and it is free. No card required, and the free plan does not expire. An account is what lets the waters you follow, your pinned spots and your catch log follow you between your phone and your laptop.

  • Can I get my catch log back out?

Yes, on any plan, as often as you like. Your catch log and your pinned spots each export as a CSV file that opens in any spreadsheet. Nothing is held back if you decide to leave, and you do not need Pro to take your own fishing with you.

  • Do I still need a fishing licence?

Yes. You need a valid licence, and any stamps it requires, to fish. ReelRegs does not sell or issue licences and holding an account is not a licence.

Go fishing.
